Spousal support can be granted only in the case of former spouses who were married or joined in civil union. It is paid temporarily to a spouse who requires financial help to get a new start in life.
As each case is different, several factors are taken into account in deciding to grant support and in determining the amount. These decisions are made by a judge, except where the former spouses settled these matters in an earlier agreement.
