Social assistance payments (welfare) and support payments

Responsibility : Ministère de l'Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale

Support is paid regularly
If you receive social assistance payments from the ministère de l’Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale, you must inform the MESS if you also receive support payments from a former spouse, whether through Revenu Québec or directly. The amount of support will be taken into account in calculating your social assistance payments.

Support is not paid regularly
If you are entitled to receive support but do not receive regular payments, you must inform the ministère de l'Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale, which will take this into account in calculating your social assistance payments, by paying an amount equal to the support to which you are entitled, up to the maximum prescribed by law. In addition, it will take action on your behalf with Revenu Québec to ensure that it recovers the amount of the support from your former spouse.
