Responsibility : Human Resources and Social Development Canada

If you are a de facto spouse and lived in a de facto union for at least one year before you separated, you can apply for a pension split under the Canada Pension Plan. On certain conditions, you may be eligible to share your former spouse’s pension benefits.

To find out more about the conditions and time limits for applying for a pension split, see the detailed information.

Note
Only people who have worked in Canada outside Québec are entitled to receive benefits under the Canada Pension Plan.
